MEP Anderson and Senator Reilly urge EU action on Youth Unemployment

20 March, 2014 - by Martina Anderson MEP

Sinn Féin’s Senator Kathryn Reilly and Martina Anderson MEP will meet with EU Commission officials today to push for action on youth employment in Ireland.

The Sinn Féin politicians are urging the EU Commission’s Directorate General (DG) of Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion to look again at how the EU can help tackle youth unemployment.

Martina Anderson said:

“Among the issues we will discuss are alternative possibilities for funding from the Youth Employment Initiative for the north.

“Ireland’s levels of youth unemployment are running at 23 per cent just below the EU’s 25 per cent threshold, so we currently can’t access support from this fund.

“I intend to investigate with the DG the availability of complementary funding streams for Youth employment projects/apprenticeships for the North.”

Senator Reilly commented:

“I will be seeking clarification on what funding Dublin can draw down from Europe.

“We will be enquiring as to how the effectiveness of Youth Employment Programs (Youth Guarantee Schemes) supported by the EU funding in Ireland north and south are being assessed.

“What benchmarks and indicators are or will be used to assess the standard of jobs/apprenticeships/traineeships and the employment outcomes for participants?

“Are there alternative program entry criteria to Youth Employment Programs for young people just entering the workforce and therefore not registered as unemployed?”
