Call for end to nightly carnival of sectarianism – Rosie McCorley

20 March, 2014 - by Rosaleen McCorley

Sinn Féin MLA Rosie McCorley has called on the Orange Order and on political unionism to call off the protest at the Twaddell interface.

The West Belfast MLA made her call after the PSNI revealed to the Justice Committee at the Assembly that the policing bill for the Twaddell protest for November and December last year was almost £2m.

“The protests at the Twaddell interface, which are a blatant attempt at raising inter-community tensions and sectarianism, are a drain on policing resources and the public purse.

“All the protest has done is damage community relations and lowered the quality of life for people who live close to the interface.

“There has been a failure of leadership from political unionism and indeed the Orange Order since this camp was set up.

“It is well beyond time they ceased playing to the lowest common denominator and ended this nightly carnival of sectarianism.”
