MEP candidate Carthy launches petition to scrap May 1st Carbon Tax hike
The Sinn Féin MEP candidate for the Midlands Northwest, Matt Carthy, has today launched an online petition which calls on the government to scrap their plan to increase the Carbon Tax on May 1st.
The petition can be accessed at www.ipetitions.com/petition/stopthecarbontaxincrease
Speaking today Cllr Carthy said:
“On May 1st 2014 Fine Gael and Labour intend to increase the Carbon Tax from €10 to €20 per tonne on solid fuel.
“What this means is that the price of a bag of coal will increase by €1.20 which will result in the closure of retail outlets and an increase in fuel poverty across the state.
“I have set up this online petition as a campaigning tool to allow the people have their say and to show opposition to this price hike.
“Fuel poverty is a very real issue, particularly amongst the elderly and lower income families who are more likely to use solid fuel. They will be disproportionately affected by this price increase.
“I am urging as many people as possible to sign this petition and to make their voices heard.”
