Sinn Féin Senator Trevor Ó Clochartaigh has stated that the Government must take urgent measures to prevent the collapse of the price of beef.
Speaking in the Seanad today Sinn Féin’s spokesperson on rural development Senator Trevor Ó Clochartaigh said:
“The current pricing situation is damaging the Irish farming industry.
“The collapse in beef prices over the past few months has been led by the factories and has caused hardship and desperation for farmers.
“It is clear we need an independent regulator for the beef industry.
“Beef processors are too powerful. Farm organisations have been pointing this out for some time but the current crisis has brought the issue to a head.
“We need an independent regulator with the power to impose a code of practise that also has real powers of investigation.
“The beef industry has become anti-competitive.
“Beef processors are calling the shots. They can change their specifications at will and keep prices unsustainably low.
“The Government must take action.
“Sinn Féin is in favour of the labelling of beef.
“Sinn Féin Minister for Agriculture in the north, Michelle O'Neill is in favour of Irish beef being labelled Irish beef, north and south.
“I would urge Minister Coveney to work towards that end in co-operation with the British ministry and with the one in the North.”
