Animal cruelty must be tackled

31 March, 2014 - by Oliver McMullan

Sinn Féin MLA Oliver McMullan has said Sinn Féin will continue to work to ensure that the highest standards are brought forward for the protection of animals from cruelty.

Speaking in the Assembly debate Mr McMullan said:

“Over the past few weeks we have seen cases brought before the court where people have been involved in cruelty to animals.

“And although many of the people involved were found guilty I was disappointed that some of the sentences were I believe lenient.

“I welcomed the motion today in the Assembly that allowed us to debate the issue and look at ways of increased protection for all animals whether domestic or farm livestock.

“Since Sinn Féin has taken on the portfolio of Agriculture we have implemented the highest standards of animal safety.

“We will continue to work with the Department of Justice to ensure that these standards are implemented.

“We will also continue to look at any additional measures that could be reasonably brought forward in order to protect all animals.”
