Housing announcement welcome but more needs to be done – Fra McCann

1 April, 2014 - by Fra McCann

Sinn Féin MLA Fra McCann welcomed news that Clanmil Housing Association will build 1,600 new houses but said much more needs to be done to tackle the crisis in social housing.

The Sinn Féin housing spokesperson said:

“Sinn Féin welcomes the announcement of new homes by Clanmil but clearly there is a crisis in the delivery of social housing.

“This announcement will mean 400 new homes each year for the next four years.

“However, when this is put against the fact that 22,000 people require homes immediately, this puts these new builds in perspective.

“This announcement will only scratch the surface of that demand and it puts an onus on the DSD minister to do more.

“What is needed is a comprehensive housing strategy, which actually addresses the huge numbers in housing stress. This is what the minister needs to produce and deliver.

“Sinn Féin believes these new homes should be targeted towards those areas most in need. Objective need has to be the guide by which allocation and areas are selected.”
