Sinn Féin Transport spokesperson Dessie Ellis TD has called on Minister Leo Varadkar to progress with the proposal to end tolling on the Limerick Tunnel. He made his comments in response to claims by the Minister that he is considering the possibility of removing the tolls levied at trucks using the tunnel.
"The Public Private Partnership model that gave rise to this situation has failed the public purse, motorists and hauliers in the long term costing everyone a lot more than the cost of the tunnel and its maintenance.
In a time when motorists and hauliers are struggling to keep their vehicles on the road with high taxes, insurance and fuel costs any step to make things more affordable for these groups is welcome. Breaks in tolling have been shown to have a positive effect on local business and the wider economy.
To this end the Minister must act on his proposal that these tolls end and he should act immediately. He should also move to end tolls on other roads where they still exist and cease in the paying of penalties to tolling companies."
