Sinn Féin’s Matt Carthy has given a cautious welcome to the government’s support for Sinn Féin’s Wind Turbine Regulation Bill.
The Midlands Northwest candidate said:
“While I welcome the fact that the government have indicated that they will not oppose Sinn Féin’s Bill when it comes to a vote tonight, it is important that this piece of legislation is enacted in full and not just left sitting on a shelf.
“Sinn Féin will keep the government under pressure to ensure that this is not just a kicking to touch in the face of an election. All stages of the Bill must be followed through in a timely manner and all measures enacted in full.
“Communities across rural Ireland have campaigned tirelessly against the construction of large industrial wind turbines in their localities. They should not now be left waiting for these new regulations to come into force.
“I am calling on government representatives to stick by their decision today and ensure that this Bill moves speedily through the Oireachtas and these regulations, that are community-centred, are made law without delay.”
