Sinn Féin Senator Trevor Ó Clochartaigh has welcomed the decision by the Seanad to invite the north’s First and Deputy First Minister to address the Upper House.
Speaking in the Seanad on the President’s visit to Britain Senator Ó Clochartaigh said:
“This event owes its success to the Peace process and has its origins in the hard work and effort that has gone into ensuring political progress, especially in relation to the Good Friday Agreement.
“And while there is outstanding work to be done in terms of the contested constitutional position of the north we now have an unprecenented opportunity in the years ahead to bring about a peaceful and democratic resolution to this issue.
“In light of the on-going visit of Martin McGuinness to Britain it would be a great honour if both he and Peter Robinson were to pay an official vist to Seanad Eireann and address the House.
“The time is now right for the Seanad to re-issue the invitation and for the First Ministers to brief the House on the political reality on the ground in the north and to provide it with an update.”
