Sinn Féin spokesperson on Arts, Heritage, Tourism and Sport, Sandra McLellan TD, has today raised the plight of tenants in the private rented sector with An Taoiseach.
Speaking in the Dáil McLellan said:
“Private rented sector cannot and will not provide the solution to the current housing crisis this state faces.
“The current crisis allows tenants to be exploited by unscrupulous land lords.
“People in private rented accommodation live precariously. Many losing their deposits, subject to massive rent increases and petty harassment.
“Local authorities Rental Accommodation Scheme has been totally undermined by the actions of private landlords.
“Tenants need security of tenure, rent control and recourse to swift action against exploitive landlords.
“The Landlord and Tenant Bill is urgently needed and must offer real protection and rent control for tenants.
“The government must introduce the bill as soon as possible.”
