Speaking in Strasbourg on the issue of Animal Health and Food Safety Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson said:
“Agriculture is at the heart of Ireland’s economy - North and South.
“We take our animal health status very seriously and Ireland as a whole should be declared Brucellosis free by next year.
“Our all island animal health strategy has the objective of allowing free movement of animal's through-out Ireland.
“This strategy must be recognised by Europe instead of using the artificial partition of Ireland as a barrier to trade. Animal Health and Food Safety does not recognise lines on a map and any divergence from all-Ireland regulation will only threaten our disease free status. It is also responsible for current anti-competitive practices by Meat Factory Buyers in Ireland.
“The new EU animal health law due to be agreed in 2015 - must recognise Ireland as one island and remove these illogical barriers to animal movement and trade.
“Furthermore, the revision of official controls regulation puts food and food safety back on the table presenting an opportunity to ensure potential risks are eliminated.
“We cannot allow another horse meat scandal to happen.” CRÍOCH/END
