People will see through Fine Gael spin on Family Home Tax: Doherty

24 April, 2014 - by Pearse Doherty TD

Sinn Féin Finance Spokesperson Pearse Doherty TD has said people will see through Fine Gael's cynical electioneering on reducing the Family Home Tax in some areas.

Deputy Doherty said Sinn Féin Councillors have been mandated to vote for the maximum decrease since the tax was first mooted.

Deputy Doherty said:

“This electioneering will be seen by the people for what it is – a cynical ploy. Sinn Féin’s long standing position is that all our councillors in all areas will vote for the maximum reduction in the Family Home Tax.

“If elected to government after the next election Sinn Féin will scrap the tax. That is a 100% reduction in all counties.

“The Fine Gael source is clear that those in the wealthiest areas will be prioritised for this reduction.

“Last month I showed that the so-called ‘mansion tax’ element of the tax had brought in a tiny amount of only €2.5m. Clearly the lie that the Family Home Tax is in any way a progressive tax has been well and truly rubbished.”
