Sinn Féin MLA Martin McGuinness welcomed news that the congress of the World Council of Credit Unions is to be held in Belfast in 2016.
The Joint First Minister said that the credit union movement had played a key role in disadvantaged communities in Ireland and across the globe.
Martin McGuinness said,
“It’s great news for Belfast and for the local economy that the congress of the World Council of Credit Unions is to be held in the city in 2016.
“This is the latest in a succession of blue-chip events coming to the city and providing a much-needed boost to the local economy.
“It is another sign of the increasing confidence in our ability to host major international events.
“It is also recognition of the key role that the credit union movement has played in the economy of disadvantaged communities all over Ireland and across the globe.
“Credit unions have been a safety net for families, particularly in times of economic recession and hardship, preventing them from falling into the clutches of unscrupulous people lending money at exorbitant rates.” ENDS/CRÍOCH
