Sinn Féin Dublin City Councillor Micheál Mac Donncha has said the decision by Minister Jimmy Deenihan to approve the plans by Chartered Land to develop a shopping centre at Moore Street will lead to the destruction of the ‘Lanes of History’ and the demolition of most of the East side of Moore Street.
Speaking this evening he said;
“The Minister has made the wrong decision. The re-submitted Chartered Land plan, which the Minister has now approved, does not fully safeguard the National Monument.
“By giving approval to this plan the Minister is opening the way for the development of Chartered Land’s proposed giant shopping mall which will see most of the East side of Moore Street demolished.
“The ‘Lanes of History’ behind Moore Street will be destroyed and the potential for a 1916 historical quarter lost.
“Sinn Féin will continue to oppose the Chartered Land plan and to campaign for the preservation of Moore Street and the development of a historic 1916 Revolutionary Quarter as outline in our proposals launched on Easter Sunday.”
