Sinn Féin’s Matt Carthy has said that it is no accident that the five counties to receive the least amount of Enterprise Ireland investment are in the Midlands Northwest.
The Midlands Northwest candidate made his comments in response to news that counties Leitrim, Laois, Roscommon, Offaly and Sligo each received less than 1% of Enterprise Ireland funding last year.
Cllr Carthy said:
“The Midlands Northwest constituency has been severely hit by unemployment and emigration. It beggars belief, therefore, to learn that five counties in the constituency received the least amount of Enterprise Ireland funding overall last year.
“Shocking as these figures are, it is unfortunately no accident as this government has consistently failed to address the lack of jobs investment in this region.
“The jobs crisis has not gone away. Young people are still emigrating in their droves. Their families will read these figures and wonder what, if anything, the government is doing to keep their loved ones at home.
“This is simply not good enough. We need real investment in jobs. The Border, Midlands and Western region remains among the worst in the state for investment in jobs. This must change.”
