Sports bodies back McKay proposal to abolish rates

6 May, 2014 - by Daithí McKay

North Antrim Sinn Féin MLA Daithí McKay has said there is a clear majority within the sporting community in favour of his proposal to abolish rates for amateur sports clubs.

Tomorrow morning (Wednesday) Daithí McKay will be making a presentation to the Finance and Personnel Committee on his Bill. Representatives from the Sports Forum will also be speaking in favour of his Private Members Bill.

 Daithí McKay said,

“There has been an unprecedented response to my consultation on this Bill, which has received over 1,000 respondents.

“An overwhelming majority of these were in favour of the proposal to make community and amateur sports clubs fully exempt from paying rates.

“This is already the case in the rest of Ireland and is an option for councils in Britain.

"I will be outlining to the committee tomorrow morning the community and social benefits this will have and the fact that the north is bottom of the league when it comes to backing amateur sports clubs.”
