Sinn Féin Spokesperson on Education Jonathan O’Brien TD has today called on the Government to review how the Youth Guarantee Scheme is being implemented in Ireland due to its discriminatory effects on young people with disabilities.
The Cork North Central TD said:
“The Youth Guarantee Scheme at European level when it was conceived was intended to address the various needs of all young people across Europe.
“However, the Government, when it began a national implementation plan for the Youth Guarantee in Ireland, decided to target young people between 18 and 24 who were in receipt of Jobseekers payments.
“As a result it excludes certain sections of society who don’t get the same benefits as others through the guarantee and young people with disabilities are massively discriminated against because those on Disability Allowance aren’t targeted for education or training in the same way as those on Jobseekers.
“People with disabilities have a lot to offer Ireland and are being neglected by this government who seem to only want certain types of persons in employment.
“We are calling on the Government to review the implementation of the Youth Guarantee as a matter of urgency and make it more inclusive for those who are left by the wayside at the moment.”
