Noonan must not allow ECB to frustrate work of banking inquiry

7 May, 2014 - by Pearse Doherty TD

Sinn Féin Finance Spokesperson Pearse Doherty has called on Minister Michael Noonan to immediately release the Trichet letter which reportedly bullied the Irish Government of the time into the bailout programme.

Deputy Doherty was speaking this evening after a letter from ECB President Mario Draghi to Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson said that the Irish Government would have to consult with ECB if it wishes to provide the letter to the banking inquiry.

Deputy Doherty said;

“Minister Noonan has committed to releasing the Trichet letter to a banking inquiry. Yet here we are on the eve of the establishment of the inquiry and the ECB is trying to put a spanner in the works.

“It has always been our view that the Minister Noonan should not have to wait for the establishment of a banking inquiry to publish the letter. He should publish it immediately.

“The public has been waiting for this inquiry for six years and the minister should not allow the ECB to frustrate its work before it even begins.”
