McCann supports migrant workers and Irish Travellers

8 May, 2014 - by Jennifer McCann

Sinn Féin MLA Jennifer McCann slammed the recent spate of hate crimes in Belfast when addressing the Labour Plus Project seminar in Newry to support migrant workers and Irish Travellers.

The recent spate of hate crimes in Belfast unfortunately demonstrates there continues to be those who believe they can attack and intimidate people of different races,” said the Junior Minister in OFMdFM.

“This intolerance is unacceptable and can’t be allowed to fester. By working together we send out an important message – everyone is a valued member of society and has a crucial contribution to make.”

At the seminar European partners shared their experience of helping migrants and Irish Travellers better integrate into the labour market.

“Migrant workers have a vital role to play in the growth of the economy north and south. A number of our sectors rely heavily on the efforts of people who have come here from across the globe.

“So everyone who comes here should have equality of opportunity and be treated with respect.

“We have a particular interest in Irish Travellers and sharing our experiences will help support this racial group’s integration into society across Europe.”ENDS/CRÍOCH
