HGV levy a barrier to cross-border trade – McElduff

12 May, 2014 - by Barry McElduff

Sinn Féin MLA Barry McElduff has said the Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV) levy is a barrier to cross-border trade.

Speaking following an Assembly debate on a Sinn Féin motion on the issue, the West Tyrone MLA said,

"The Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV) levy, which was imposed by Westminster, acts as a barrier to north/south mobility and trade.

"It is ill-thought out and does not fit the particular circumstances of the island of Ireland. In fact it violates the spirit of north/south co-operation.

"It needs to be overturned for the benefit of hauliers throughout Ireland.

"The minister of the environment's emphasis in the debate was on HGV traffic on the A5.

“While that is welcome, I would like to see it taken further for an exception for all roads in the North."ENDS/CRÍOCH
