Gender inequality must be eliminated

13 May, 2014 - by Jennifer McCann

Sinn Féin MLA and Junior Minister Jennifer McCann has said all forms of gender inequality must be eliminated.

Speaking at the opening of an International Business Women's Conference in Belfast, the West Belfast MLA said;

"It is important that we eliminate all forms of discrimination and gender inequalities, which holds women back from reaching their full potential in every level of society.

"Sinn Féin is passionate about promoting gender equality, as is evident in our selection of 3 women to stand for 4 MEP seats in the European elections and the number of women candiates selected to stand in  the local elections across Ireland.

"It is recognised that we have to be innovative and creative to grow our economy and to do this we need everyone to participate; men and women.

"Women face many barriers in all walks of life and it can be  difficult to juggle a job with long hours with other responsibilities.

"Today's conference will illustrate it can sometimes be harder for women to succeed in business, not because men are better, but  because women face more obstacles.

"That is why having the support and encouragemnet of other women, quality afforable  childcare, and positive role models are important.

"We must ensure that the proper policies and programmes are put in place to remove all forms of discrimination and promote gender equality in all aspects of life."
