Basque extradition attempts should end - Sheehan

14 May, 2014 - by Pat Sheehan

Sinn Féin MLA and international spokesperson Pat Sheehan has slammed the decision by a Belfast court to dismiss the appeal of the Fermin Vila Mitxelena, a Basque living who is now fighting against an extradition attempt by Spanish authorities.

Speaking today Mr Sheehan said:

“The decision by a Belfast court to dismiss the appeal of Fermin Vila who is currently fighting extradition to Spain is the wrong decision.

“Fermin’s legal team has stated that the evidence against Fermin Vila was obtained by torturing his two co-accused.

“There is growing evidence form a number of international bodies that torture exists and continues against Basques being detained by Spanish authorities.

“There is also a growing movement against the treatment of and breaches of human rights against Basque Prisoners being held in Spanish jails not least in the European courts.

“The continual and vindictive pursuing of Basque people living in Ireland by the Spanish authorities flies in the face the attempt to build a peace process in the Basque Country.

“It cannot continue. Spain must seize the chance to build a lasting and just peace in the Basque country instead of constantly putting up obstacles to peace.”
