Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson has expressed her sympathy on the death of Babis Angourakis, an activist in the Greek Communist Party and member of the GUE/NGL Group in the European Parliament from 2009 to 2014.
Speaking today Ms Anderson said:
“Babis Angourakis was a good friend of Ireland and of Sinn Féin.
“During his time as MEP he visited Ireland on a number of occasions. I was particularly pleased to welcome him to the Free Derry wall this time last year.
“Babis was much appreciated for his warmth and humour, as well as for his firm opposition to the ruinous austerity policies of the EU, from which people in Ireland and Greece have suffered.
“I want to extend my condolences to his family, friends and colleagues on his passing.
“Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.”
