The rights of people with disabilities must be protected – McCann

14 May, 2014 - by Jennifer McCann

Sinn Féin MLA Jennifer McCann said today that people with disabilities are entitled to the same rights as everyone else in society.

The Junior Minister was speaking after attending a meeting today at Stormont on the best ways to protect the rights of people with disabilities.

The West Belfast MLA said,

"One in every five people will have some form of disability in their lifetime.

"Unfortunately many people with disabilities still face obstacles, which prevent equal access to services and opportunities.

"Some of those barriers include access to transport, buildings and suitable housing.

“Others are linked to employment, access to services and leisure facilities.

"It is important that all of us work together to ensure a more inclusive and joined-up approach to supporting people with disabilities in education, work and society.

"People with disabilities are entitled to the same rights as everyone else in our society."
