Reacting to news of the possible closure of maternity units in Ballinasloe, Letterkenny, Sligo or Mayo, Sinn Féin’s Matt Carthy said that these proposals “must not even be considered”.
Speaking in Co. Meath today the Midlands Northwest candidate said:
“While on the campaign trail in Longford and Westmeath yesterday I made the point that rural Ireland is under sustained attack from this government. The news today that the Minister for Health would even consider shutting down maternity hospitals in four rural areas of the west and North West is further evidence of this.
“Nobody is denying that these services need to be vastly improved, but a knee-jerk reaction to close, or as the HSE say ‘reconfigure’ the units should be rejected outright.
“People in rural Ireland are already under pressure and fearful for their futures. This news will create further uncertainty for women and their families in the west and North West.
“I am calling on the Minister for Health to bin this report and start over. We need a world class maternity and health service as a right, not closed doors.”
