Sinn Féin vice-Chair of the Enterprise Committee, Phil Flanagan MLA has welcomed the job creation figures released by Invest NI.
Mr Flanagan said; “The 11,000 new jobs supported by Invest Ni in 2013 are to be welcomed especially by those successful applicants.
“Alastair Hamilton in releasing the figures confirmed what Sinn Féin has always maintained – that the majority of new and existing jobs are in fact created by indigenous enterprise. For this reason we have always advocated greater emphasis on support for local entrepreneurs.
“While we should continue to seek maximum Foreign Direct Investment – and I commend the First and deputy First Ministers in their efforts - I believe that we must also increase our focus on assistance for SMEs who it is acknowledged provide 90% of jobs.
“I would also urge Invest NI when consulting with prospective investors to incentivise them to locate in areas of severe unemployment, especially West of the Bann which has suffered from historic underinvestment.”
