Health Workers pay debacle unacceptable – Maeve McLaughlin MLA

28 May, 2014 - by Maeve McLaughlin

Sinn Féin Chair of the Assembly Health Committee, Maeve McLaughlin MLA has described the ongoing problems in processing Health Workers pay as totally unacceptable.

Maeve McLaughlin said:

“The situation with the processing of Health Workers pay in the Northern and Belfast Trusts is totally unacceptable. A one off glitch in the payroll system could be understandable but there is no excuse for it being allowed to recur month after month.

“It is obvious that the system is not fit for purpose and any intention to roll it out to the other Trusts should be abandoned. Thousands of workers are unable to meet personal commitments such as mortgage, rent, car and other family bills while the Minister dithers.

“Minister Poots must act decisively. Health Workers are under enough pressure in their daily working conditions without having the added worry of not knowing if they will get paid at the end of the month. The Department issuing a standard statement every month that ‘the cause has been identified and steps have been taken to ensure this problem does not recur’ is not good enough.”
