Sheehan welcomes inquest archive index

29 May, 2014 - by Pat Sheehan

Sinn Féin MLA Pat Sheehan has said an index of coroner's inquest files will help families of those killed in the conflict.

Speaking after Culture Minister Carál Ní Chuilín launched an index of more than 13,000 coroner's inquest files, including information on around 3,000 people who died as a result of the conflict, the West Belfast MLA said;

"I welcome the move by Culture Minister Carál Ní Chuilín to create an index of more than 13,000 coroner's inquest files.

"Part of this index will include information on around 3,000 people who died in the conflict and this will be particularly welcomed by their families and loved ones.

"The information will then be published online and families will be able to access it, in some cases for the first time.

"This is important because members of the public will be able to identify the information held in the public records.

"Of course this is an emotive for many people and I have been assured it will be handled with sensitivity and that requests to access files will be subject to scrutiny.

"This is a major piece of work and I look forward to its completion."
