Minister Reilly must clarify conflict of interest on Maternity Services review – Senator Ó Clochartaigh

29 May, 2014

Sinn Féin Senator Trevor Ó Clochartaigh has today called upon Minister for Health James Reilly to clarify outstanding issues around the reconfiguration of Maternity services and the procurement of the report by Health Partnership tasked with examining them.

Senator Ó Clochartaigh said:

“When Minister Reilly addressed the Seanad on the reconfiguration of Maternity services across the hospital group yesterday he mentioned issues around the procurement of the report which examines this.

“It has subsequently been brought to my attention that there may be serious repercussions to this statement and that the Minister wasn’t fully open and transparent with the information available to him.

“I understand that the report to reconfigure the maternity services was commissioned from a company called the Health Partnership. Workers’ representatives believe that the report will result in the closure of maternity centres in Portiuncula hospital in Ballinasloe and in Letterkenny and possibly downgrading of other services in the group.

“That is a company that was set up by the current Chair of the hospitals group, Mr Noel Daly

“Mr Daly was appointed Chair of the group by the Minister who expressed full confidence in him at the time

“It would appear that there may be a huge conflict of interest involved in the commissioning of this report.
