Urgent action call on health workers’ pay at Executive – McLaughlin

29 May, 2014 - by Maeve McLaughlin

Sinn Féin MLA Maeve McLaughlin has called on the health minister to take urgent action to ensure staff receives their full wage entitlements.

Speaking after the matter was discussed at a meeting of the Executive today, the health committee chair said;

"Leaving health workers without pay or with insufficient pay to feed their families and meet their household bills is not an option.

"This issue has been dragging on for too long.

"Sinn Féin brought it before the Executive today to impress upon the minister that he needs to take urgent action to sort this out.

"Some staff are waiting for wages earned last month and others have not received money they are owed from previous months.

"Failure to address this is putting working families in acute financial crisis where they are unable to meet commitments such as their mortgage, rent, car or other bills.

"The minister can no longer hide behind departmental statements that the matter is being dealt with."
