Sinn Féin MLA Alex Maskey said today he was struck by the deep hurt in the Muslim community at comments made by Pastor James McConnell and First Minister Peter Robinson.
Mr Maskey was speaking after he and Councillor Deirdre Hargey had visited the Islamic Centre in South Belfast.
Alex Maskey said:
“Councillor Hargey and myself went to the Islamic Centre to show our solidarity with the city’s Muslim community in the wake of the offensive and insulting comments made by Pastor McConnell.
“What struck us was the deep hurt caused by the pastor’s diatribe against Muslims.
“That deep sense of hurt was compounded by the refusal of the First Minister to say the comments were wrong and Peter Robinson’s own patronising remarks about Muslims.
“Despite their obvious sense of disappointment that the First Minister had failed in his duty to support their community we were also impressed by the sheer dignity of Muslim leaders. Their demeanour was in stark contrast to that of the First Minister.”
