Sinn Féin spokesperson on Workers Rights, David Cullinane, has appealed for calm amid the ongoing crisis over the future of jobs at the Bausch + Lomb Factory in Waterford.
Senator Cullinane said:
“The announcement that two hundred jobs are at risk and that workers must accept a twenty per cent reduction in pay or Bausch + Lomb will leave Waterford is simply appalling.
“A thousand people are employed at the company and the proposed restructuring would have a devastating impact on the workers, on their families and on Waterford.
“The city and the south east region have some of the highest levels of unemployment in the country.
“In economic and social terms any further job losses or reductions in take home pay would be catastrophic.
“I am appealing to people to allow SIPTU the time and space it needs to find a resolution to what is a very serious situation.
“There is an onus on the government and on all of us to save Waterford and the workers at Bausch + Lomb from plunging into the abyss and economic ruin.”
