Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams TD this morning made a presentation to outgoing Belfast Mayor Máirtín O Muilleoir on his last day in office. It is a book about the artist John Lavery.
Commenting on Máirtín O Muilleoir’s year as Mayor Gerry Adams said:
“Each of the Sinn Féin Mayors and Deputy Mayors of Belfast, from Marie Moore and Tom Hartley, to Tierna Cunningham, Joe O Donnell, Danny Lavery, Alex Maskey and Niall O Donnghaile all brought to the role their own unique style, personality and enthusiasm.
At different times in the development of the City over recent decades they took initiatives and worked hard to represent all the citizens of Belfast. Their efforts enhanced the ability of citizens to live together.
Máirtín is a part of this proud tradition. In his year in office he demonstrated a remarkable capacity to reach out beyond political barriers and embrace all the citizens of the second largest city on the island of Ireland.
Máirtín’s energy and passion for Belfast was amazing. His initiatives in support of community and jobs and investment and tourism, or for political outreach always caught the attention of the media and made a valuable contribution to the life of Belfast.
As Mayor Máirtín has stood strong against sectarianism and bigotry, and in more recent months against racism and hate crime. There can be no place in our society for these.
I thank Máirtín for his work, and Helen and their entire family for their patience. Máirtín will be a hard act to follow. He has been an exemplary First Citizen and I wish him and the clan O Muilleoir well for the future.”
