Sinn Féin will continue to oppose fracking - Gildernew

4 June, 2014 - by Michelle Gildernew

Sinn Féin MP Michelle Gildernew has said she will continue to oppose controversial fracking for shale gas.

Speaking after new proposals were revealed at Westminster to allow companies to drill under private land without the permission of the landowner, the Fermanagh/South Tyrone MP said;

"Sinn Féin's position is quite clear. We remain fundamentally opposed to any form of fracking.

"While we will be seeking clarification on the implication of this proposal, planning permission for any drilling operation rests with the Department of the Environment.

"If any application is made Sinn Féin will be bringing it to the Executive to oppose it.

"There is widespread opposition to fracking right across Ireland.

"As a sign of that opposition, landowners in Fermanagh are signing a pledge to state they will not give permission for fracking on their land."
