Sinn Féin MLA Gerry Kelly has welcomed the Parades’ Commission’s decision to reject an application for an Orange Order parade on the Crumlin Road this Saturday morning, 7 June.
Gerry Kelly said:
“I welcome the sensible decision by the Parades Commission to stand over its own determination made in July 2013 on a return parade past Ardoyne, Mountainview and the Dales.
“The application for a parade this weekend was always about unionism trying actively to undermine the Parades Commission.
“The behaviour of the loyal orders and paramilitaries since last year’s return parade was restricted by the Parades Commission has been scandalous.
“The camp at Twaddell, countless illegal marches and paramilitary displays at a sensitive interface have all been about increasing tension and bringing pressure to bear on the Parades Commission to force a march through the area.
“These actions have cost the public purse £9m in policing alone.
“It was important therefore that the Parades Commission stood over its decision which put meaningful and genuine dialogue at the heart of resolving parading issues on the Crumlin Road.” ENDS CRÍOCH
