Mother and baby home investigation must be thorough - McCann

10 June, 2014 - by Jennifer McCann

Sinn Fein MLA and Junior Minister Jennifer McCann said the horror of what happened in mother and baby homes must be thoroughly investigated.

Speaking after a statutory Commission of Investigation into mother and baby homes was announced by Charlie Flanagan, the Minister for Children, the West Belfast MLA said;

"It is clear that many young women and girls and their babies were subjected to the most cruel and degrading treatment at the hands of those who ran these institutions.

"That is why our party called for a comprehensive investigation into mother and baby homes after the appalling situation at Tuam coming to light.

"The Historical Institutional Abuse Inquiry is currently taking place in the North investigating the abuse of children in Institutions in this part of the island.

"We are also looking at how we can investigate the cases of those who were over 18 years old who were also victims of horrific Institutional abuse.

"I have asked for an update on all institutions that were operational in the North to be drawn up including mother and baby homes.

"The shameful practices that went on and the trauma mothers and babies were subjected to must be thoroughly investigated."
