Sinn Fein’s Peadar Tóibín TD has welcomed a decision by the Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation Committee to seek a Dáil debate on the EU Colombia Trade Agreement in advance of Ireland’s ratification of the agreement.
The Meath West TD said:
“Sinn Féin along with members of the European Parliament and a host of NGOs and trade unions has raised significant concerns regarding human rights issues associated with the EU Colombia Trade Agreement due for ratification by Ireland over the coming months.
“Ratification of the Agreement requires advance approval by the Dáil yet the Jobs Minister so far refused to commit to a Dáil debate on in advance of the vote.
“During today’s Jobs Committee meeting it was agreed that the members will write to the Jobs Minister to request that he agree to a Dáil debate on the EU Colombia Trade Agreement before it goes to a vote.
“It would be a ridiculous scenario where the Jobs Minister would seek Dáil approval of such an important document yet block any discussion by TDs regarding the Agreement in advance of a vote.”
