Sinn Féin MLA and Junior Minister Jennifer McCann has said the role of mother and baby homes in the North should be investigated.
The West Belfast MLA said;
"The treatment of many young women and girls at the hands of those who ran these institutions was nothing short of cruel and degrading.
"Following the appalling situation which came to light in Tuam, Sinn Féin called for a full investigation into what happened.
“I welcomed the subsequent announcement from Charlie Flanaghan, the Minister for Children.
"I also asked for an update on all institutions that existed in the North and have now received clarification that mother and baby homes were in operation in the North since 1922.
"The role of these institutions in every part of the island and the trauma that was inflicted on women and children needs to be thoroughly investigated." ENDS/CRÍOCH
