Following the resignation tonight of the Chairman of the West North-West Hospital Board Noel Daly, Sinn Féin Leader Gerry Adams TD said:
"Mr Daly had no option other than resignation considering what has emerged about his conflict of interests.
"I have twice raised this conflict of interest issue in Dáil in the past week, most recently this morning with An Taoiseach.
"It was also raised last week in the Seanad by Sinn Féin Senator Trevor Ó Clochartaigh.
"So the Government was aware of this issue for some time.
"Mr Daly was appointed as Chairman of the West North West Hospital Group by Minister for Health James Reilly.
"The Hospital Group subsequently contracted a private consultancy firm, of which Mr Daly is a founder and shareholder to draw up a report on Maternity services in the West North West region.
"This report has engendered widespread concerns about the future of maternity services in the region.
"Minister Reilly needs to come into the Dáil and explain how such an appointment was made considering this most glaring conflict of interests.
"Mr Daly is a well known promoter of the privatisation of health services.
"The Minister also needs to clarify the status of the report on maternity services carried out by Health Partnership.
"Sinn Féin has made clear our view that the Minister for Health should go. This latest issue and the case of missing Medical Card files, which I also raised with the Taoiseach today, confirm that view.
