Sinn Féin MLA Alex Maskey has said building more social houses is the most effective to reduce waiting lists.
Speaking after chairing a session at the Policy Forum seminar on housing, the South Belfast MLA said;
"This was an important conference as it included a range of speakers working across all aspects of housing including the Housing Executive, housing associations and private developers.
"Everyone was in agreement that the most effective way to address the growing homelessness problem and reduce housing waiting lists is to build more social houses.
"Despite all the work being done by various bodies the problem remains that housing waiting lists continue to get longer.
"More and more people are in danger of losing their homes and becoming homeless and as a result waiting lists grow.
"Building more social homes is crucial to tackling this problem. The social development minister needs to direct funding into large scale building programmes, which adequately addresses housing need."
