Sinn Féin MLA Raymond McCartney has welcomed a £2.2 million funding package for the redevelopment of the Museum of Free Derry.

Speaking after plans for the redesign of the Bogside museum were unveiled, the Foyle MLA said;

"The Museum of Free Derry is instrumental in telling the story of our recent history in Derry, particularly the events from the start of the civil rights era through to Bloody Sunday.

"Countless visitors from across the world have come to the current museum at Glenfada Park, the scene of a number of the murders carried out on Bloody Sunday, and have been hugely impressed by the facility.

"This funding will allow the museum to grow and develop to meet the rising demand from international and local visitors.

"The Museum of Free Derry is an important facility in the city as it tells the story of the community.

"It is also a key to attracting tourists to the city, and the Bogside area in particular, and the redevelopment of the museum will help draw even more visitors."
