Sinn Féin’s Agriculture Spokesperson Martin Ferris TD has called on Minister Simon Coveney to work closely with Agriculture Minister in the Assembly, Michelle O’Neill, to solve the crisis of the cross-border cattle trade.
Speaking after questioning Junior Minister Tom Hayes TD in the Dáil this morning, Deputy Ferris said:
“The traditional trade in exports to the North has collapsed due to the penalisation of nomadic cattle by retail multiples there.
“I cannot understand why Minister Simon Coveney will not co-operate with Sinn Féin’s Agriculture Minister in the Assembly, Michelle O’Neill MLA.
“The cross border trade benefits everyone. Co-operation on this matter would be mutually beneficial and Minister Coveney must make it a priority.
“The Minister needs to give his full attention to this problem.
“Farmers need support and leadership at this time and the minister is not giving it.”
