Sinn Féin agricultural spokesperson, Martin Ferris TD, said today that the Minister for Agriculture is living on “another planet” if he thinks he is in touch with the reality of farmers lives and has a good relationship with farm organisations.
Deputy Ferris said:
“Twice this week we have seen farmers protests outside the Dáil and government buildings. One was about the crisis in the beef industry and the one today is about issues to do with Pillar II of CAP.
“This government and this minister have lost touch with the weaker sections of the farming community, just as they have abandoned the more vulnerable people in all sectors. His junior minister, Tom Hayes, in the Dáil today, claimed that the minister has a good relationship with the farm organisations. If he thinks that, he is living on another planet.
“Today, he was not in the Dáil to take questions from agriculture spokespersons, even though the date had been changed to suit him. Does he not realise the seriousness of the crisis facing farmers, particularly those in the beef sector?”
