Social Development Minister must restore public confidence in department - Maskey

19 June, 2014 - by Alex Maskey

Sinn Féin MLA Alex Maskey who is also the chair of the Social Development Committee at Stormont has said that the Minister, Nelson McCausland must address the growing concerns over public confidence and transparency within the Department of  Social Development.

Speaking after the Committee which called the Minister in front of them Mr Maskey said:

“A number of months ago the Minister for Social Development came to the Assembly and announced that investigations were under way into alleged over payments to four contractors totalling £18m.

“Today at the committee the Minister confirmed that the contractors and the Housing Executive have reached an agreement which has to be signed off by his department.

“This situation has been a mess from the start which has resulted in a shadow being wrongly placed over the contractors while also affecting the programme of repairs to tenants homes.

“Still the Minister was unable to state clearly when this matter will be concluded.

“This process will now drag on despite reassurances from the Minister. I have little faith in the Department to resolve it quickly.

“The Minister must now address growing concerns over public confidence and transparency within the Department of  Social Development.”
