Archbishop should withdraw threat to close schools in Ballyfermot - Doolan

23 June, 2014 - by Daithí Doolan

Sinn Féin Cllr. Daithi Doolan has called on the Archbishop of Dublin, "to withdraw the threat to close schools in Ballyfermot."

Cllr. Doolan, speaking ahead of today's protest, said:

"The Archbishop has made a unilateral decision to close schools in Ballyfermot. There was no consultation with parents, staff or pupils. This is totally unacceptable. Today's protest is an attempt to show the level of anger and opposition to the closure.

"It comes the same week that the Archdiocese is in front of the Dáil committee on education. There are serious questions for the Archbishop to answer. Who is driving the agenda to close schools, why has there been no consultation and has the Archdiocese looked at alternatives?

"If the Catholic Church is unable or unwilling to continue in education that is fine, but no school should be closed. The buildings and land should be given to the state so the children of Ballyfermot continue to receive a high standard of education in the best environment possible."
