O’Brien calls on Minister for Education to make statement on industrial dispute

26 June, 2014 - by Jonathan O'Brien TD

Sinn Féin Education Spokesperson Deputy Jonathan O’Brien has today called upon the Minister for Education and Skills to make a statement on a picket that is currently placed on the Department of Education building in Dublin.

The Cork North Central TD said;

“It has emerged that both SIPTU and BATU members are picketing the Department of Education premises on Molesworth Street in Dublin over an industrial dispute with companies engaged by the Department in the schools building programme.

“Trade union members are alleging that the companies contracted in the schools building programme are in breach of contract by refusing union access to the sites, not providing pay slips and not paying correct rates of pay or bank holiday pay.

“If this is correct the Minister has an obligation to make a statement on this.

“There are number of schools in Cork affected by this including in Watergrasshill, Cloghdubh and Midletown.

“I have submitted a request to the Ceann Comhairle to discuss this matter in the Dáil today.”
