Sinn Féin spokesperson on Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Martin Ferris TD has expressed his concern over the treatment of fishermen at Kilmore Quay in Co Wexford.
Deputy Ferris said:
“For the second time in a month officers from the Sea-Fisheries Protection Authority boarded the same fishing trawlers at Kilmore Quay. This is very intimidating for those fishermen who are simply trying to earn a livelihood in increasingly difficult conditions.
“The fishermen have contacted me to express their frustration and anger as they genuinely feel that they are being unjustly targeted by the SFPA.
“These fishermen are already finding it hard to survive due to constraints placed on them by quotas, especially when they see vessels from other EU member states fishing with larger quotas. Some of them are talking about getting out of fishing altogether.
“I feel that I have to raise this in the Dáil with Minister Coveney this week.”
