Sinn Féin MLA Cathal Boylan has appealed for all road users to show caution and stay safe over the summer months.
Speaking after raising concerns about the number of road deaths at a meeting of the environment committee today, the Newry and Armagh MLA said;
"The number of tragic deaths on our roads in recent days is very worrying.
"There have already been 40 deaths on the roads to date this year compared to 27 this time last year.
"However, statistics do not show the heart-breaking devastation that each death brings to families and communities.
"We must work collectively to ensure our roads are as safe as possible for all users.
"At this time of year as we are coming into the summer holiday period I would encourage all motorists and pedestrians to show caution and be aware of other road users.
"As a member of the environment committee I will continue to ensure the relevant authorities continue to do all they can to work together to reduce road deaths."
