PSNI must meet targets on domestic and sexual violence - Ruane

4 July, 2014 - by Caitríona Ruane

Sinn Féin MLA Caitríona Ruane has called on the PSNI to do more to bring those responsible for domestic and sexual violence to justice.

Speaking after a meeting of the Policing Board, the South Down MLA said;

"It is alarming that there have been increases in the reporting of both domestic and sexual violence.

"Reporting of domestic violence has risen by 10 per cent while reporting of sexual violence is up by 14 per cent.

"I raised concerns about this with senior PSNI officers, including the Chief Constable at the Policing Board meeting.

"There are now targets in the policing plan for the first time around these issues and I urged the PSNI to make sure adequate resources are put in place to ensure those targets are met.

"It takes a great deal of courage for victims of domestic violence and sexual violence to come forward and report these crimes.

"I called on the PSNI to continue to work with organisations like Women's Aid to support victims of these crimes.

"The PSNI has a duty to these victims to bring those responsible to justice."
