Sinn Féin to attend beef farmers crisis meeting in Ballinasloe
Sinn Féin Agriculture spokesperson Oliver McMullan has welcomed the confirmation that MEP Martina Anderson and Minister of Agriculture Michelle O’Neill will attend the upcoming meeting in Ballinasloe to discuss the crisis in the beef industry.
Mr McMullan said,
“It is essential that the interests of beef farmers in the North are represented at the managers of livestock marts meeting this Friday in Ballinasloe and at the public meeting afterwards.
“There is a crisis within the beef industry right across the island of Ireland with farmers being squeezed by processors and retailers forcing many out of business.
“This meeting is an opportunity for mart managers, farm organisations and beef farmers come together to try to resolve this situation.
“Agriculture and agri-food industry has sustained the local economy over the past few years and is growing year on year with another massive job announcement in the sector yesterday but if beef farmers are to be part of this success we must act now.
“Sinn Féin will have a senior delegation of three MEPs, a Minister as well as Martin Ferris TD at these meetings outlining the seriousness in which we are taking the situation.
“We will continue to work on behalf of the beef farmer to protect their way of live and ensure fairness in the market in the coming weeks and months ahead.”
